Backcountry Sports is a bat workshop in the Kashmir valley. We are not a trading company that puts stickers on someone else’s blades — the clefts are graded, pressed, shaped, gripped and stamped in our own factory, by people who have been doing it their whole working lives.
Kashmir willow gets written off as the cheap option. That reputation comes from what the trade did to it, not from the timber. Rushed drying, one-pass pressing and machine-copied shaping will ruin any willow you like. Given twelve months of air drying and a proper progressive press, Kashmir willow gives you a hard-hitting, extremely durable bat at a fraction of the price of imported English willow — which is why it is the bat most cricket in this country is actually played with.
Two families of bat, six models. Season bats in three grades for leather-ball cricket, and three tennis-ball bats for the tape-ball game played on every street and matting wicket in the subcontinent. We keep the range small on purpose. Six models we can control the quality of beats thirty we cannot.
Club and district players, school teams, academies, and the tournament sides who buy ten bats at a time before a season. If you are kitting out a club, talk to us about bulk pricing — we would rather do a good deal directly than through three layers of distribution.
The workshop is at Bat Factory Road, Sangam, Anantnag, Kashmir 192121, India. Call +91 194 000 0000, message us on WhatsApp, or email orders@backcountrysports.com. If you are in the valley, come and see the bench — we would rather show you the press than describe it.
